“Groundbreaking“ in Export: Kartographie Huber wins Bavarian Export Award

Bavarian economic affairs minister awards cartographic family business for success in foreign trade

Munich – Martin Zeil, Bavarian Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology, presented the Bavarian Export Award 2009, category services, to the company Kartographie Huber of Munich, Germany.

In the Middle East Cartography Huber is part of the ICON International Consortium in Manama, Bahrain, serving MENA with Huber maps made for government agencies and private sector companies of the Gulf states like Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and North African countries such as Libya, Morocco and many others.

An international success story: The Bavarian cartography engineer Franz Huber explains his formula for success. “When the Iron Curtain was opened some twenty years ago, it was immediately clear to me that people would want to use their newly won freedom to travel and would need maps. Realising that Europe was growing together was our first big step on the way to becoming an export business. Since then we have expanded into many countries and regions.”

The global competition left only two choices for the company before the turn of the millennium: “Either use top talent and state-of-the art technology to win new customers outside of Germany or disappear from the market as many other German map companies had done.” says Franz Huber.

Especially successful was the outgoing Bavarian's approach not to shoulder the global market on his own: Unlike many of his competitors he did not insist on selling maps under his own brand. Instead he offered local licenses to the best foreign publishing companies, which would then sell his maps under their own brand names. “It’s much easier to send ideas and intellectual property around the world than to ship tons of printed city and country maps and atlases.” Huber explains.
